A three-car pileup in Costa Mesa resulted in five people being hospitalized, officials said.

Officers responded to a call just before 11:30 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of Fairview Road and McCormack Lane after three vehicles collided and hit a power box in the center median that controls municipal sprinklers, the Costa Mesa Police Department said.

Street racing is being investigated as a possible factor in the crash, according to police spokeswoman Roxi Fyad.

No arrests have been made, police said.

The five people taken to area hospitals were between the ages of 18 and 38, said Costa Mesa Fire Department spokesman Joe Noceti.

Four of them suffered moderate to severe injuries, and one had minor injuries, Noceti said.

Five ambulances and 23 fire and emergency medical personnel were called to the scene, the Fire Department said.
