Burlesque show coming to Laguna Beach on Sunday

Laguna Beach may become the Orange County epicenter of burlesque shows.

Main Street Bar and Cabaret, a gay bar, is hosting a burlesque show from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday. It’s the first of what organizers hope will be a monthly production.

Whisper Sisters Burlesque Shows is creating the event, titled “Sunday Skirts.” The company’s name is taken from a term used to describe women who ran bars in the Prohibition era.

Lillian DuJour — the 62-year-old founder of Whisper Sisters, burlesque performer, instructor and former figure skater — said Sunday’s show is looking to attract the Orange County lesbian community, but all are welcome.

“Sunday Skirts” will include various dancers showcasing periods of burlesque styles. Eva Ziegfield, a drag performer, will serve as host.

Main Street will also open its dance floor and offer drink specials.

DuJour said burlesque is a regular thing in Los Angeles and San Diego, but could use a revival in Orange County, where it is less often performed. The historic art form can be sexy, teasing, comically dark and even political, she said.

DuJour also offers workshops for women of all ages looking to learn burlesque and boost their confidence.

“I’m doing it to show women that you can be sexy at any age,” she said. “My whole mission is being sexy after 60.”

Main Street is at 1460 S. Coast Hwy. Tickets start at $25 for “Sunday Skirts” and are available at brownpapertickets.com and facebook.com/WhisperSistersBurlesqueShows, which has a discount code.
