Girls soccer: Newport edges Irvine

Amy Burlingham scored in the sixth minute on a breakaway and it was

all visiting Newport Harbor High would need as the Sailors defeated

Irvine, 1-0, in a Sea View League girls soccer game Tuesday.

Goalkeeper Kara DeMille made two saves for the Sailors, who outshot

Irvine, 10-2. Stopper Erin Hardy made key plays for Newport (10-6-3,

3-1-2).

Erica Peterson made seven saves for Irvine.

The victory keeps Newport Harbor in the thick of the race for a berth

in the CIF Playoffs. Next on the agenda is a home match on Thursday under

the lights (5 p.m.) against Laguna Hills.
