Men’s basketball: Lions lose

COSTA MESA - The Vanguard University men’s basketball team fell

behind late in the game and couldn’t hold on in an 87-79 Golden State

Athletic Conference loss to Concordia Tuesday at the Pit.

Vanguard trailed by as many as 13 points late in the game. Chris

Victor made two free throws for the Eagles with 2:38 remaining to give

Concordia its biggest lead of the game, 65-78.

The Lions fought back to within four points with less than 30 seconds

left to play. Vanguard sophomore guard Josh Pierson hit back-to-back

three-pointers to bring the Lions within four points, but Concordia

(17-8, 9-4) made six straight free throws to put the game away.

Alton Smith topped all players with 27 points. Damion Morbley led the

Lions with 19 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds. Shane McKim and

Pierson each added 14 points for the Lions (12-10, 8-5).
