Extended tax return deadline approaching
The Internal Revenue Service is reminding taxpayers who requested
a four-month extension to file 2003 federal income tax returns that
the extended deadline is Aug. 16.
If taxes are not filed by that deadline, a late penalty of 5% a
month of the unpaid tax will be charged, but those with special
circumstances can request an additional two-month extension by
completing Form 2688 by Aug. 16.
Those who requested the initial extension can still file
electronically using tax-preparation software, the IRS free-file
program or an authorized “e-file” provider. Information on the
free-file program and Form 2688 can be found at https://www.irs.gov.
State approval cuts into Hoag healthcare plan
The state Department of Managed Health Care on Friday approved a
plan by Blue Shield to drop hospitals, including Hoag Hospital, from
the list of facilities people insured under the CALPERS Blue Shield
health maintenance organization can get care.
CALPERS officials have said the decision to drop some hospitals
from its network was an effort to control healthcare premiums.
CALPERS is the state’s public employees retirement system.
Hoag was among 25 hospitals that will be cut from the network. The
health plan changes become effective in 2005. In Orange County,
21,000 CALPERS members use the Blue Shield HMO, and 2,400 of those
are served by the Greater Newport Physicians Group, which includes
doctors who work out of Hoag Hospital or refer patients there.
