Three schools
named top in state
Three Huntington Beach schools were among those chosen as 2005
California Distinguished Schools when award recipients were announced
Tuesday by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell.
Ocean View High School, in the Huntington Beach Union High School
District, and Marine View and Vista View in the Ocean View School
District were three of 192 California schools honored with the award.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the state’s Distinguished
Schools program.
District seeks input on closed schools
The Huntington Beach City School District is seeking applications
from community members who are interested in being appointed to the
Asset Management Committee.
The committee will be assembled to determine the best use for the
district’s closed school sites. These sites include Burke, Kettler
and LeBard elementary schools, and Gisler Intermediate School. The
committee will make a recommendation and present it to the board of
trustees.
Applications are available at any district school site or by
calling the District Education center at (714) 964-8888. The deadline
to submit an application is April 27.
Rally scheduled to support funding
The Huntington Beach Education Coalition, a division of the Orange
County Education Coalition, will hold a rally to support full funding
for public schools from 4 to 6 p.m. May 3 in the parking lot of
Ocean View High School, 17071 Gothard St. Community members, parents,
teachers and students are invited to attend.
“I think this is a symbol of the commitment that this community
has to their children,” said Huntington Beach City School District
Trustee Shirley Carey. “We want to come together and show that.”
The rally will be a countywide effort, Carey said. The education
coalition is encouraging everyone to wear the color orange on the day
of the rally to demonstrate unity throughout Orange County.
“I think this is not just an education issue, this is a
community-wide issue,” Carey said.
