Sage Hill def. Oxford AcademyCYPRESS — Sophomore Bayle Smith recorded 16 kills and four blocks to lead the Lightning to a 25-23, 25-9, 25-18 Academy League win Friday.

Freshman Joey Booth added 12 digs and six kills, while sophomore Harlan Webster contributed three aces for Sage Hill (8-7, 4-2 in league). Sophomore setter Michael Bear chipped in with 21 assists for the Lightning, ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division V, who play host to Whitney Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Santa Barbara Tournament of ChampionsSANTA BARBARA — Junior Gus Ellis tallied 21 kills in two matches for Corona del Mar High, but the top-seeded Sea Kings were upset by No. 8-seeded Foothill in a quarterfinal of the 16-team tournament Friday at Santa Barbara High.

Ellis produced 10 kills for the Sea Kings, who lost, 25-15, 25-20, 25-19, to the Knights.

Ellis had 11 kills and five blocks to lead Corona del Mar (22-2) to a 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 victory over Santa Ynez, ranked No. 8 in CIF Southern Section Division II. Senior Blaine Nielsen added nine kills, senior Brad McCoy contributed seven kills and senior Phil Bannan had 27 assists in the match.

The Sea Kings are ranked No. 1 in CIF Division II and Foothill is No. 6 in Division I.

Corona del Mar Coach Steve Conti said the Sea Kings committed, “about 35 unforced errors,” against the Knights.

“We couldn’t get anything going,” Conti said. “That was the frustrating thing. I think our guys underestimated their ability. They took it to us. We came in mentally not so focused and they just jumped on us. They shell-shocked us.”

Corona del Mar will play in a fifth-place semifinal today at 9 a.m.

Santa Barbara Tournament of ChampionsSANTA BARBARA — Newport Harbor High split its first two matches, first losing a marathon match to Harvard-Westlake, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 30-32, 5-15, at Santa Barbara High. The Sailors then rebounded to sweep Cleveland High of Reseda, 25-14, 25-11, 25-15, at Dos Pueblos High.

Senior Weston Dunlap had 13 kills and seven blocks against Harvard-Westlake for Newport Harbor (12-11). Junior Tucker Peleuses had 12 kills and three blocks, and junior Kyle Caldwell added seven kills, seven blocks and 40 assists.

Junior Max Volz had six kills and eight blocks for the Tars, and junior Mark Liebermann had five kills and five service aces.

Liebermann had a team-high 13 kills and two more aces against Cleveland. Caldwell tallied nine kills and four blocks and Peleuses had eight kills.

Newport Harbor is in the consolation semifinals of the 16-team tournament today at 10:45 a.m. against Dos Pueblos, at Dos Pueblos High.

Laguna Beach def. EstanciaCOSTA MESA — Junior Barry Fryslie had eight assists and freshman Kohl Jones added six digs for the Eagles in their 25-10, 25-14, 25-16 Orange Coast League loss Friday.

The Eagles dropped to 3-12, 0-5 in league. They will play at Costa Mesa Tuesday at 4:45 p.m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 16,COROANA DEL MAR — Mike Kidushim had six goals and two assists to help lead the Sea Kings to the victory Wednesday.

David Kidushim contributed four goals and one assist, while Noah Molnar added three goals and one assist. CdM will play host to rival Newport Harbor today at 10 a.m.
