The Dinah Shore Scholarship foundation offers two types of golf scholarships, one for girls who played golf in high school and will continue to play in college and the other, which Speare had applied for, is for girls who played high school golf but are not playing golf at the collegiate level.

The scholarship recognizes an individual’s outstanding academic achievements, golf involvement during high school and community service. A check for $5,000 was sent to Northwestern University’s Financial Aid office to be applied toward Speare’s college expenses, said Carolyn F. Bivens, commissioner of the LPGA.
