Gap closes its clothing store at Triangle Square

The Gap has closed at Triangle Square, in the latest case of a major retailer leaving the Westside shopping center in recent years.

The apparel store was one of the few retail sites left at the shopping center near the foot of the 55 Freeway, which in recent years has seen the departure of Barnes & Noble and Virgin Megastore, among others. Tuesday afternoon, the former Gap space sported brown paper over the windows and a pair of signs on the glass double doors stating the store had closed.

Officials for Triangle Square could not be reached for comment Tuesday, but Keith Scheinberg, the owner of the shopping center’s Chronic Cantina restaurant, said he was surprised when the Gap locked its doors. His own business, he said, had been thriving of late.

“There’s people there” at Triangle Square, Scheinberg said. “The mall’s definitely not failing. But I think it’s going through a process of natural selection about what’s going to do well there.”
