Free compost given away to residents May 9

The city of Laguna Beach, Waste Management and Tierra Verde Industries are teaming up to give away free compost to Laguna Beach residents from 8 a.m. to noon May 9 at the Act V Lot, 1900 Laguna Canyon Road.

This is a self-service event, so bring gloves, shovels, bags or containers. There will be a limit of 96 gallons of compost (about one full green waste cart) per household. Business Recovery series begins Tuesday

The Laguna Beach Chamber of Commerce and Civic Assn. is providing education and guidance to struggling businesses, with a four-part Business Recovery Series featuring business cash flow trainer Norm Bour.

The series starts 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, and continues for four consecutive Tuesdays at the American Legion Hall, 384 Legion St. Registration for chamber members is $20 per session or $80 for all four weeks. Non-member rates are $50 per session or $150 for all four weeks.

Lucinda Prewitt is named Woman of the Year

Lucinda “Cindy” Prewitt has been selected as Woman of the Year by the Laguna Beach Woman’s Club. She will be honored at a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. June 5 at the Clubhouse.

Prewitt was selected for more than 30 years of leadership as a community volunteer.

Exchange club banquet will honor police

The Laguna Beach Exchange Club will host the annual Police Awards Banquet at 9 a.m. May 14 honoring police department employees for meritorious service.

Officer Jason Farris has been selected as the Police Officer of the Year, and Property Manager Cathy Berg has been selected as the Civilian Employee of the Year.

All members of the public are invited to attend this special event, which will take place at Tivoli Terrace, 650 Laguna Canyon Road. Reservations at $40 per person can be made by calling Sande St. John at (949) 499-9429, or by e-mailing sstjohn@cox.net. Reservations should be made by May 11.

Hourly tours of Aliso Canyon are Saturday

A tour of Aliso Canyon will take place Saturday, sponsored by Laguna Canyon Conservancy, Laguna Greenbelt, South Laguna Civic Assn., Village Laguna, the Democratic Club and several neighborhood associations.

Tours will leave at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon from Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, 28373 Alicia Parkway, Laguna Niguel. For reservations, call (949) 499-1224 or e-mail slarimer@cox.net

Charity golf tournament to benefit teams, clubs

The fifth annual Dave LaBohn Memorial Spring Classic Charity Golf Tournament will be at Arroyo Trabuco Golf Club in Mission Viejo at 11 a.m. May 11. All proceeds will go to Laguna Beach High School Girls and Boys Golf Teams, Laguna Beach Community Clinic, Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach, Pacific Marine Mammal Center, the Senior Center and the Resource Center.
