Schools require pertussis vaccine

Starting July 1, students in grades 7 to 12 will need to show that they received immunization against whooping cough or pertussis.

Assembly Bill 354 was created after an outbreak of whooping cough, a highly contagious respiratory disease, in California.

There is no grace period so students are encouraged to get the immunizations as soon as possible. They cannot start school without proof of the vaccine.

El Morro book fair this month

El Morro Elementary School is hosting its Spring Book Fair Carnival from May 23 to 27.

Proceeds go toward the school. Not only can students buy books for themselves, but they can also buy books for friends, family and teachers. They can visit the Teacher Wish List Board for ideas on what to buy to show their appreciation.

Girl Scouts hit San Francisco

A group of 20 Laguna Beach Girl Scouts made the trek to San Francisco for the 30th annual Girl Scout Golden Gate Bridging from May 6 to 8.

The 1-mile walk is a Girl Scout tradition that symbolizes their transition from Junior Girl Scouts to Cadettes.

Troops 1440, 308, 1250 and 714 made the trip with leaders Jennifer Baker, Stephanie Masaki-Schatz, Diana Cimino, Christy Perales and Gina Borelli.

“This was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our troop,” troop leader Jennifer Baker said in a statement. “Our journey across the bridge was so meaningful as we took in the natural beauty of the ocean, the mountains and the bay with thousands of other girls all participating in this symbolic Girl Scout event.”

Many of the girls funded the trip themselves through cookie sales.

‘Tangled’ for toddlers

The Laguna Beach Recreation Department has announced a four-week dance classes for toddlers and youngsters inspired by the film “Tangled.”

Instructor Linda Haylett will teach the class, which includes songs and dances based on the story of Rapunzel.

Other classes such as pre-ballet for toddlers, combo tap/ballet/jazz and Do Re Me singers will also interpret the favorite childhood fairytale.

El Morro Math Stars

El Morro won first place in one of five categories at the Mathematics Field Day Competition at Capistrano Valley High School on Saturday.

The fourth-grade teams competed in mathematical reasoning, statistics, data analysis, probability, number sense, measurement, geometry and algebra. The El Morro team won first place in measurement and geometry.

Robert Lebby coached the team of fourth-graders, which included Alexis Yang, Connor Sorensen, Cal Nielson and Mason Lebby.

The team met once a week to go over math concepts and problems.
