A 55-year-old Costa Mesa man died while in the sheriff’s custody, authorities said Thursday.

Stephen Douglas Mott was suffering from chronic medical issues when he was taken to West Anaheim Memorial Hospital. In a news statement the sheriff’s department said there was no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Mott was taken to Orange County jail by Costa Mesa police Tuesday on suspicion of burglary and petty theft, according to a release from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

The Orange County District Attorney is investigating the death.
