National Library Week hits Newport

If you are reading this, somewhere right now, a librarian is smiling in satisfaction over a job well done.

To further promote the love of reading — a chief tenet of the librarian code — in all age groups, the Newport Beach Public Library is hosting a full week of free programming in observance of National Library Week, Sunday through April 14, at branches throughout the city.

“The goal for any of our programs is to bring people into our branches and make them aware of what we have to offer,” Youth Services Manger Debbie Walker said. “We see that families who come in for one program often come in and wander into the story room and discover other programs, so, it’s about creating that awareness that we’re here and we’re a very valuable resource.”

Although programs for adults, such as discussions on how to use and download library material via e-reader devices, are part of the week-long lineup, the emphasis this year is on young readers, Walker said.

Newport Beach council members will lead children’s storytime sessions at various branches. Other planned children’s activities include the Mad Science Show at the Central Library at 4 p.m. Tuesday; Storytime with a Twist at the Corona del Mar Branch Library at 4 p.m. Wednesday; Dream with Your Hands at the Balboa Branch Library at 4 p.m. Thursday; and the Sunshine Storyteller at Crean Mariners Branch Library at 2 p.m. April 14.
