Group hosts Banning Ranch event to focus on impacts

Newport Crest community members will hold an outdoor event from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday with information from environmental advocates about the Banning Ranch development.

The meeting's focus is to create awareness about the impact of the development on businesses and the community.

The space at issue is the 400-acre Banning Ranch parcel on West Coast Highway from Superior Avenue to the Talbert Nature Preserve.

Keynote speakers are Claire Schlotterbeck, an environmentalist and director of Hills for Everyone, a group focused on the preservation of Puente-Chino Hills, and Joy Horowitz, author of "The Poisoning of an American High School."

Speakers will begin at 2 p.m. at the end of Ticonderoga Street in Newport Beach.
