Events set to commemorate 9/11 in Newport-Mesa

Groups around Newport-Mesa will commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks Tuesday. Below is a listing of events.

Whittier students fly flags

Students from Whittier Law School, 3333 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa, will decorate the school’s lawns with hundreds of American flags.

“This tribute allows the diverse Whittier Law School community to come together, to remember the lives that were lost, and show our gratitude for the heroes who risked everything to help,” David Saetang, president of the Student Bar Assn., which organized the tribute, said in a prepared statement.

The flags will remain in place until Tuesday evening.

Patriots Day barbecue

The American Legion Post 291, 215 15th St., Newport Beach, will host its Patriot Day barbecue starting at 4 p.m.

Cowboy West Productions will provide tri-tip, pork ribs, chicken and more. The post will have a short 9/11 ceremony at 6 p.m. The regular Taco Tuesday and line dancing lessons are still happening.

Moment of silence

Costa Mesa’s city staff will host a short ceremony and moment of silence beginning at 9:45 a.m. at the City Hall flagpole, 77 Fair Drive. An American flag flown over the World Trade Center site will be at half-mast. The moment of silence starts at 9:59 a.m.

Ride to Remember

The 2012 Remember 9/11 Ride starts at 3:15 p.m. at Cook’s Corner, 19152 Santiago Canyon Road, Trabuco Canyon, which is also hosting a pancake breakfast and concert.

Participants will ride from the 241 Toll Road to the 133 Toll Road to Pacific Coast Highway to the Gaslamp in Long Beach, where they will raise a glass and toast to those who died.

Riders must stop and pay the toll or carry a transponder. The toll is $1.70.
