Laguna Beach Police officers will be on alert for drunk drivers during a citywide DUI checkpoint program this weekend.

Officers will monitor Laguna streets from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m. Sunday in areas with high frequencies of DUI collisions or arrests, according to a police department release.

DUI collisions have resulted in 60 injury crashes, harming 85 persons in the past three years in Laguna, Lt. Jeff Calvert said in the release. In California, DUI crimes led to 774 deaths in 2010.

Police stress this is a zero-tolerance crackdown and drivers will be stopped and arrested for alcohol and drug violations.

Grant funding for the program came from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
