Public invited to review of surfing rules

Newport Beach will begin reviewing its surfing regulations at a community meeting Oct. 21.

The public is invited to provide comment to the Blackball Working Group at 6 p.m. in the community room at the Newport Beach Civic Center.

Blackball regulations refer to the yellow flags marked with black circles that indicate when beaches cannot be used for surfing. They are erected for safety reasons and to allow other beachgoers to enjoy the water.

The city will be reviewing for the first time in more than a decade the times, dates and locations that these flags are used.

Those unable to attend the meeting can also send input to Blackball@newportbeachca.gov.

[For the record, 3:21 p.m. Oct. 14: An earlier version of this post incorrectly implied the date of the meeting was Monday, Oct. 14. It is actually Oct. 21.]
