For the past 24 years, the PGA Champions Tour has been teeing off in Newport Beach, attracting tens of thousands of visitors, volunteers, luminaries and legends. And each year our guests take a long look at our amazing city and say the same thing: “Newport Beach is breathtaking.”

From the radiant sun to the sand and surf, Newport Beach is a mesmerizing jewel that hardly hides its glitter. The Hoag Classic showcases the sophistication, fun and beauty of Newport Beach to a national and international audience.

The tournament attracts a field of professional players that rival any major golf championship, which might be why it is such a powerful economic force for our town. The economic benefits of the Hoag Classic exceed millions of dollars and touch nearly every corner of the community.

Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian took the helm of the tournament this year, ensuring its continued success. To date, the classic has raised more than $20 million for Hoag and other local charities, making it one of the most successful philanthropic stops on the Champions Tour. It is only fitting that a partner responsible for the wellness of our residents would make such an impact on our community.

This annual event highlights just how closely knit and special this community truly is. Our community gives back, even as it has fun. In addition to a world-class hospital, great schools and safe neighborhoods, we have the largest recreational harbor on the West Coast, destination shopping and dining options, luxury resorts and, of course, championship golf courses.

In other words, Newport is one of the most remarkable cities in the region — and this tournament gives us the opportunity to show it off. The 2019 Hoag Classic, which will run from March 6-10, is expected to draw golf legends, such as Fred Couples, John Daly, Bernhard Langer and Mark O’Meara. The Golf Channel and PGA partner overseas to televise the exciting event at Newport Beach Country Club, providing incredible visibility for our community.

California has no shortage of destination locations — the state sees more than $100 billion in tourism spending each year. But Newport Beach is a standout in a state that has so many standouts for worldwide appeal. And the Hoag Classic showcases what is so unique and exciting about our community.
