College Roundup: UC Irvine baseball shuts out Sacramento State

Trenton Denholm threw six shutout innings, as the UC Irvine baseball team defeated visiting Sacramento State 2-0 on Friday night in a nonconference series opener.

The Anteaters starter allowed four hits and walked three while striking out five.

Adrian Damla singled to right field with two outs in the third inning, scoring both Jake Palmer and Mike Peabody for the only runs of the game.

UC Irvine improved to 7-6 overall.

Vanguard 21, San Diego Christian 2: Josh Weeks and Landon Riker each had four runs batted in for the host Lions on Friday in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Aki Buckson, Luke Arias and Riker each homered in the contest for Vanguard.

Vanguard 9, San Diego Christian 2: Weeks and Riker combined for five hits and four runs batted in for the Lions in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.

Riker and Buckson both homered again for Vanguard (19-6, 7-3 in conference).

SOFTBALL

Arizona Christian 3, Vanguard 1: Cassie Balswick had a hit and drove in a run for the Lions on Friday in the first game of a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader at home.

Arizona Christian 2, Vanguard 1 (nine innings): Courtney Thornhill allowed just two unearned runs in a complete-game effort, but the Lions were swept in Friday’s doubleheader.

Johanna Lewis had a hit and a run batted in for Vanguard (18-6, 2-2). Hannah Corrado scored the run.

Fullerton 5, Orange Coast 2: Ally Cisneros drove in both runs for the host Pirates on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game.

Janae Gomez had two hits and a run scored for Orange Coast (2-8, 0-5). Jaelyn Operana also had a hit and scored a run.

Santa Ana 6, Golden West 0: Emily Rosas struck out five in a no-hitter for the visiting Dons on Friday in an Orange Empire Conference game.

Kaylee Canto, Kendall Kallsen and Jenn Swartz drew walks for Golden West (8-10, 1-6).

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine 3, North Greenville 0: Joel Schneidmiller had a team-high 15 kills and four service aces to lead the Anteaters to a 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 sweep on Friday in a nonconference match in Phoenix.

Akhil Tangutur added 10 kills for UC Irvine (9-7). Patrick Vorenkamp added 32 assists and two aces.

Grand Canyon 3, Vanguard 1: Kyle Anema had 13 kills, and Christian Nowtash added 11 kills, but the visiting Lions dropped Friday’s nonconference match 25-21, 25-20, 27-29, 25-14.

Bryce Thompson also had 40 assists for Vanguard (10-6).

Golden West 3, San Diego Mesa 0: The host Rustlers swept 25-19, 25-16, 25-13 in Friday’s nonconference match.

Golden West is now 6-5 overall.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 77, Vanguard 64: Victoria Chea had 20 points, six assists and five rebounds, but the Lions dropped Friday’s semifinal game in the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament in Santa Barbara.

Michaella Elad added 13 points, 11 rebounds and two steals for Vanguard (23-6). Estefania Giner also had 10 points and four rebounds.
