College Roundup: OCC women upset Gauchos

Orange Coast 56, Saddleback 47

COSTA MESA — Ashley Engeln scored 14 points to help the Pirates upset the Gauchos in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Megan Hanson had 10 points, while Jenna Arnett (eight rebounds) and Tessie Pikula had eight points each for OCC (11-16, 3-7 in conference).

OCC led, 32-27, at the half. The OCC defense held the Gauchos to just 30.8% shooting from the floor (16-of-52) and forced 22 turnovers, including 13 steals.

The Pirates will hit the road and face Riverside on Wednesday (6:30 p.m.) before closing out the season at home Friday night against Cypress (5:30 p.m.).

Saddleback is 18-8, 5-6.

Saddleback 79, Orange Coast 57

COSTA MESA — Will Ligon scored a game-high 20 points, and also had eight rebounds and three steals for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Jason Payne added nine points for OCC (8-18, 3-7 in conference).

Saddleback is 18-8, 9-2.

Double-dual meet

COSTA MESA — Patrick Douglas won the 1,500 meters and the 3,000 to propel the host Pirates to Orange Empire Conference dual-meet victories over Saddleback and Santiago Canyon on Friday.

Douglas finished in 4 minutes, 5.82 seconds in the 1,500 and in 9:03.55 in the 3,000 as OCC topped Santiago Canyon, 138-16, and trimmed Saddleback, 77-76.

OCC’s Emanuel Valencia won the triple jump (13.29 meters), while finishing second in the long jump (6.30 meters) and running on second-place 4x100 and 4x400 relay quartets.

Other event winners for OCC were: Winston Lawson (long jump, 6.43 meters); Du Dao (400 in 50.42 seconds); and Cody Meddaugh (shot put with a mark of 14.72 meters).

Dao was also on the second-place 4x400 relay.

OCC’s Marco Sagasta was second in the shot put (13.16 meters) and the hammer throw (41.73 meters) and Andrew Cruikshank was second in the javelin (42.92 meters) and the discus (39.14 meters).

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Double-dual meet

COSTA MESA — Meghan Foley won two individual events and was on two winning relays as the host Pirates earned Orange Coast Conference dual meet wins over Santiago Canyon and Saddleback on Friday.

The Pirates topped Saddleback, 79-69, and bested Santiago Canyon, 121-24.

Foley topped the field in the 800 meters (2 minutes, 21.62 seconds) and the 1,500 in 4:55.44, and was on the victorious 4x100 and 4x400 relay quartets.

OCC’s Camille Garcia won the 3,000 in 10:53.69 and was second in the 1,500 (4:58.39), while Jessica Aguilera won the high jump (1.45 meters) and javelin (29.70 meters) and was second in the 100 (13.90 seconds) and the long jump (5.70 meters).

OCC’s Nikki Puerner was on both winning relays, was second in the 400 (1:02.08) and was third in the 400 hurdles (1:14.00) and the long jump (4.73 meters).

The Pirates’ Geneva Alvarez was second in the 400 hurdles (1:09.68) and the 100 hurdles (17.07).
