High School Roundup: Plenty of talent at Dave Mohs tourney

The Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament, one of the top prep girls’ volleyball tournaments, begins Friday at six school sites.

The tournament, hosted by Edison High, continues Saturday and concludes with championship finals action Monday. In addition to Edison, Fountain Valley, Huntington Beach and Marina will compete at the event.

The tournament format includes four-team pools with each team playing two pool-play matches starting at 3:30 p.m. Friday. The matches are best-of-three to win.

Teams will also play one pool match Saturday starting at 8 a.m. Single elimination bracket play will follow the completion of pool play, and all teams advance to the playoffs. First- and second-place teams will compete in the Championship bracket. All third-place teams compete in the Silver division and fourth-place teams in the Bronze division.

The finals will be played Monday at Edison’s Dave Mohs Gymnasium.

•In girls’ volleyball action earlier this week, Huntington Beach completed play Monday at the Lakewood Molten Volleyball Classic and took third place.

The Oilers went 4-1 overall. They took wins from Sonora (three sets), Notre Dame Academy (four sets) and Millikan (three sets), and defeated North Torrance in three sets in the third-place match.

Their only loss was a semifinal setback to Lakewood.

The tournament was held at the Lakewood, Mayfair, St. Joseph and Paramount high school gymnasiums.

Senior setter/opposite Kendra Koelsch and senior middle blocker Ally Forsberg of Huntington were named to the all-tournament team.

“I thought we played very good at times,” Huntington Coach Craig Pazanti said. “I think the main thing we need to work on is our consistency at this point. We are starting two freshmen and two sophomores, so that was a little expected, but it was good to see us grow as a team so early in the year.

“We had our seniors really step up this week. Kendra Koelsch, Ally Forsberg, Cheyenne Rankin and Gianna Guinasso all did a good job leading our younger players. We need to use this to build for the rest of the year.”

Boys’ Water Polo

Huntington Beach, ranked sixth in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, won its fifth game of the season Tuesday by defeating host San Clemente, 9-3, in a nonleague play.

Noah Nelson and James Vlachonassios both scored twice and Alex Wolf had 10 saves for the Oilers (5-1), who held a 4-1 halftime lead and pulled away in the fourth quarter by shutting out the Tritons, 3-0.

Huntington opened its season Sept. 5 at the Poway Tournament which ran through Saturday. They Oilers posted a 4-1 record and finished in third place.

Huntington scored victories over San Marcos (14-1), La Costa Canyon (15-5), Torrey Pines (14-2) and Westview (12-5). Its only loss was a 6-5 semifinal setback to The Bishops.

“It’s important at the beginning of the season to see ‘what a team has,’ and to have some tests along the way,” Huntington Coach Brian Anderson said. “Playing [The Bishops in the semifinal was important because they provide us a new look and style we will have to adjust to. They are well-coached, and we just missed on our opportunities. We play them again in October, hopefully we can come out on top then.”

The Oilers return to San Diego County Saturday to face Coronado at 10 a.m.

•Edison also got its season rolling Sept. 5 and earned an 11-7 victory at Capistrano Valley. Senior Alec Niederland led the scoring with five goals and came up with four steals defensively. Justin Harrison and Dane Estrella both scored twice.

Troy Oates and Luke Heydorf each had one goal to complete the Edison scoring, and goalie Nick Halloran had 10 saves, two coming on five-meter penalty shot blocks.

Edison Coach Diggy Riley said defense keyed the win.

“We were excited to kick off the season on the road at Capo Valley,” Riley said. “We have struggled there in the past but not this year. Our defense was stellar and our offense really controlled the game from the onset. “

The Chargers are back in action at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday at Beckman.
