CdM’s Abdulghany advances
GIRLS’ GOLF
CIF Southern Section individual championship/WSCGA qualifying tournament
SAN CLEMENTE — Corona del Mar High freshman Alyaa Abdulghany shot two-over-par 73 at Talega Golf Club on Thursday, qualifying for next week’s CIF/WSCGA Southern State Regional Championship.
Abdulghany finished tied for 17th among individuals competing. The top 28 advanced to the regional championship, to be played Nov. 14 at The Golf Club at Rancho California, in Murrieta. The cut was 75.
Abdulghany was the lone Newport-Mesa girls’ golfer to advance. CdM sophomore Amy Matsuoka shot a 79, and Newport Harbor sophomore Grace Ferrell shot 84.
“I’m very proud of Alyaa,” CdM Coach Mike Starkweather said. “I’m sorry for Amy, because Amy is usually very consistent ... It’s a pretty tough golf course. They played off the white tees, so the course was longer. Some of the pin placements were virtually impossible.”
Brittany Farrell of Mission Viejo captured the individual title with a five-under-par 66.
At the CIF/WSCGA Southern State Regional Championship, Abdulghany will need to be one of the top nine individuals not on a top-three team to advance to the CIF State Girls Golf Championships, scheduled for Nov. 20 at Quail Lodge in Carmel.
