Around Town: Photographers capture daily life in Laguna Beach

Four photographers earned bragging rights after nabbing top spots in Laguna Beach’s annual photo contest, which brought in 185 images from people who live, work or visit the city.

Cameron Sharifian won the grand prize. Dan Stenstend won the sunset category. John Manzoni won the environmental category. And Sophie Meunier won the daily life category.

People’s choice winners, determined from more than 1,000 online votes, were Alfredo Varela, sunset; Pamela Conrad, environmental; and Ashley Polski, daily life category.

Pacific Symphony musicians to perform for OC Fair animals

Humans aren’t the only mammals who will appreciate the Pacific Symphony’s musical talents at the Orange County Fair.

Goats, pigs, sheep and cows at Centennial Farm will be serenaded by brass musicians performing music from “Carnival of the Animals,” “Frozen” and “Star Wars” from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Bank employees donate board games to Make-A-Wish

Newport Beach Bank of America employees donated more than 600 board games Friday to support Make-A-Wish in Orange County and the Inland Empire.

The board games were collected from more than 250 employees. Make-A-Wish grants wishes for children facing critical illnesses.

Police to mark National Night Out

Newport Beach, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley police will be out in force on Tuesday, but they won’t be fighting crime in the traditional sense.

National Night Out is observed annually around the country to help police build positive relationships with residents.

Newport police will host National Night Out festivities at Bonita Canyon Sports Park from 4 to 7 p.m. with events to educate the public about crime prevention and provide a behind-the-scenes look at how police departments operate.

There will be free food, displays from the crime scene investigation, SWAT, K-9, animal control, horseback and community response units.

Costa Mesa police will host a celebration at the Police Department, 99 Fair Drive, from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be SWAT displays, a Huntington Beach Police Department helicopter demonstration, free food, a raffle and a bounce house.

Huntington Beach police will celebrate at the Target shopping center at 9882 Adams Avenue from 4 to 8 p.m. They will have a SWAT vehicle, a helicopter, horses, the K-9 unit and police cars on display.

Fountain Valley police will screen “The Incredibles” at the Fountain Valley Sports Park, 16400 Brookhurst St. There will also be food, games, raffle prizes, a K-9 demonstration and a fire truck. The event begins at 6 p.m., and the movie starts at dusk.

Costa Mesa conference to focus on coping with infant loss

Forever Footprints, an Orange-based nonprofit that provides support to women who have had a miscarriage or lost an infant, will host a conference for health care professionals Aug. 9 in Costa Mesa.

The conference at Fete the Venue will provide training for healthcare workers about how to care for grieving families.
