An electrical fire inside the marquee at the shuttered Laguna South Coast Cinemas was extinguished by Laguna Beach fire crews Saturday night.

A passerby reported smoke coming from the marquee at 162 S. Coast Hwy. shortly after 7 p.m. Firefighters determined the smoke was caused by a small electrical fire inside the marquee. No flames were seen coming from the building.

The theater, which closed in August 2015, was most recently operated by Regency Theatres, which leased it for 15 years. The building had operated as a theater for more than 90 years.

The theater was built in 1921 by the Aufdenkamp family and was renovated in 1935 as an example of Mediterranean Revival architecture, according to the Laguna Beach Historical Society.

The 15,890-square-foot property, which includes the theater and two retail stores that surround a courtyard, is listed for sale for $15 million on the real estate website LoopNet. The listing also indicates the property is available for lease.
