Bayside Drive reopens after Newport water main rupture sends mud flowing onto road

Share

A water main break on a hillside in Newport Beach early Tuesday caused mud and debris to flow onto Bayside Drive, closing a portion of the street for hours.

The break was reported at about 4:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Bayside, according to police.

City crews responded within 15 minutes and shut off the water in the area. Mud was a foot deep in some areas along Bayside Drive between Jamboree Road and El Paseo Drive, according to city officials.

Crews on 10 trucks worked throughout the morning to clear mud and debris from the roadway, and that portion of Bayside was reopened at about noon.

It isn’t clear what caused the 6-inch water main to break.
