Rodman kids could be leaving Corona del Mar for JSerra

A couple of weeks ago, D.J. Rodman played in a fall league boys’ basketball game with Corona del Mar High against JSerra. Soon, Rodman could be playing for the team he helped beat.

Two of Hall of Fame basketball player Dennis Rodman’s children — D.J. and Trinity — plan to transfer out of CdM to JSerra, said CdM boys’ basketball coach Ryan Schachter on Sunday. The departure of the two talented athletes to the private school in San Juan Capistrano would be a big blow for the Sea Kings.

“It’s going to be a big loss on the court, but I think it’s a bigger loss for us off the court for the guys. He’s such a great guy. He’s close with everyone on the team,” said Schachter of D.J., adding that he learned more than a week ago from the children’s mother, Michelle, about the possibility of them making the move to JSerra. “I know he went to visit [JSerra] on Friday. There were erroneous reports that he was on campus earlier [last] week … and that he already checked in.”

As of Tuesday afternoon, Schachter said D.J. and Trinity had not withdrawn from CdM. Schachter said Michelle did not want to talk to the media about her children’s impending transfer.

“It’s a pretty emotional decision for her, being in this community for a long time and having her kids grow up playing soccer and basketball with a lot of the kids,” Schachter said.

The Rodmans starred at CdM last season — D.J. as a basketball player and Trinity in girls’ soccer.

D.J. is in his junior year and Trinity is a sophomore. Schachter said D.J., who is 6 feet 4, has an athletic scholarship offer from the Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball program, and Trinity, a member of the U.S. women’s under-17 national soccer team, has already committed to the UCLA women’s soccer program.

Last season, D.J. and Trinity led their respective CdM teams to Pacific Coast League titles and the quarterfinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

D.J. averaged 31.3 points per game during the postseason in 2016-17, and 20.3 points and 6.5 rebounds for the season, earning All-CIF Southern Section Division 1A honors. Trinity scored 14 goals and made the All-CIF Southern Section Division 2 first team.

D.J., the Pacific Coast League MVP, would be joining a JSerra basketball program that made the Open Division playoffs, the top division, last season. The Lions compete in the challenging Trinity League, home to Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, St. John Bosco, Orange Lutheran and Servite.
