Around Town: Mesa Verde golf tournament returns Monday in Costa Mesa

The 2018 Mesa Verde Classic charity golf tournament will tee off Monday in Costa Mesa.

The annual event — this year themed “Margaritaville,” with music, food and live entertainment — is organized by Costa Mesa United, a group that supports local youth athletics. It will be held at the Mesa Verde Country Club, 3000 Club House Road. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m.

Active-shooter drill Wednesday at Laguna art college

Police officers and firefighters will converge on the Laguna College of Art + Design on Wednesday with sirens and simulated gunfire as they train on responding to an active shooter.

The exercise is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the campus, 2222 Laguna Canyon Road.

In addition to first responders from Laguna Beach, the drill will involve law enforcement and fire agencies from UC Irvine and the cities of Irvine, Newport Beach and Costa Mesa.

The exercise, partially funded through a federal grant, is open only to authorized personnel.

Laguna Canyon Road will remain open throughout the day, and officers will help direct traffic, the Laguna Beach Police Department said.

Newport Beach forum to discuss sea-level rise

A panel of UC Irvine researchers and Newport Beach city staff members will discuss sea-level rise and higher tides at the next Speak Up Newport community forum from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Speakers will include Jim Campbell of the city planning department, Robert Stein of the public works department and Brett Sanders and Jochen Shubert, members of a UCI team that is creating flood maps for Newport Beach.

The forum will be in the Community Room at the Newport Beach Civic Center, 100 Civic Center Drive.

UCI opens Division of Career Pathways

UC Irvine on Monday announced the opening of its Division of Career Pathways for students and alumni.

The division, formerly the UCI Career Center, will be associated with UCI’s Division of Continuing Education.

“The close association of career services and continuing education signals an exciting new era for UCI,” Gary Matkin, vice provost for career pathways and dean of continuing education, said in a statement. “The synergistic connection of these two important divisions illustrates UCI’s significant commitment to, and investment in, our students’ workplace preparation prior to and after graduation.”

Under the direction of Associate Vice Provost Suzanne Helbig, the Division of Career Pathways will enable students early on to gain information and expertise to identify and enter careers through online tools, videos, career-readiness courses and internships, the university said.

Costa Mesa chamber dinner to honor police and firefighters

The Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce will present a dinner Jan. 18 to recognize the city’s public safety personnel.

The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. at Fête the Venue, 3101 Red Hill Ave., Costa Mesa. Tickets are $85 per person. Sponsorships are $500 to $5,000.

Laguna Beach fills next Citizens Academy class

The Laguna Beach Police Department has stopped accepting applications for its upcoming Citizens Academy because the class is full, according to the department.

The 12-week course is designed to provide residents with a better understanding of the department. Topics will include investigations, traffic enforcement, gangs, narcotics, Neighborhood Watch, crime prevention, crime-scene investigation and the K-9 program.

O.C.’s World Affairs Council celebrates 50th anniversary

The World Affairs Council of Orange County, which seeks to inform the community about world issues, is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

An event Jan. 23 at the Hotel Irvine will feature Ryan Crocker, a former U.S. ambassador to several Middle Eastern countries, as guest speaker.
