Newport City Council to choose a new mayor Tuesday

Share

The Newport Beach City Council will select its next mayor and mayor pro tem Tuesday.

As in many other cities around Orange County, Newport Beach voters do not directly elect their mayor. Council members choose the mayor and mayor pro tem from among themselves for the one-year, largely ceremonial posts.

The mayor pro tem performs mayoral duties in the mayor’s absence and is the presumptive mayor upon completion of his or her pro tem term. This year’s mayor pro tem is Marshall “Duffy” Duffield. The outgoing mayor is Kevin Muldoon. Both have been on the council since 2014.

Before the mayoral handoff, a brief regular session will include the second reading of an ordinance to repeal city approvals for the shelved Newport Banning Ranch development. The vote is a formality that would make official the court-ordered withdrawals that the council agreed to in late November.

Tuesday’s council meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 100 Civic Center Drive. The leadership reorganization is at 7 p.m.
