314-pound bluefin tuna is record catch for Newport sportfishing operation

Newport Landing shared photos Sunday of a 314-pound bluefin tuna that the Newport Beach sportfishing and whale watching establishment said was the largest caught on its sportfishing trips since they started in 1958.

The fish was caught on the boat Thunderbird last week off the Southern California coast, according to Jessica Roame, marine education manager for Newport Landing.

“Despite having its tail eaten off by a large shark as it was being pulled into the boat, this massive fish still weighed in at 314 pounds and was 80 by 56 inches,” Roame said in an email.
