Read Across America Day brought books, backpacks, blacktop painting and campus projects to Golden View Elementary School in Huntington Beach on Monday, with the help of 140 local volunteers.
The event kicked off with a campus assembly where students received 400 backpacks donated by Teacher Created Materials, a Huntington Beach-based educational publisher.
TCM employees volunteered to spend the morning reading with students and completing literacy-focused activities, such as building an outdoor classroom related to the campus farm, creating murals and painting the blacktop, which got a map of the United States and an agility course.
Read Across America is sponsored by the National Education Assn. to promote literacy and help children access a diversity of stories through reading.
