A woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after her car allegedly struck and killed a pedestrian on Sunday night in Huntington Beach.

Huntington Beach police said their initial investigation found that an unidentified man, believed to be a transient, was crossing the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Hamilton Avenue at around 6:29 p.m. Sunday. He was struck by the driver of a white Chrysler Sebring, identified as Melanie Benner of Laguna Woods, which was traveling eastbound on Hamilton, police said.

Benner stayed on scene and was ultimately arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor DUI, said Huntington Beach Police Department Sgt. Joshua Page. The man suffered extensive injuries and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
