California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the cause of a solo vehicle collision in Trabuco Canyon Monday that killed a 22-year-old Costa Mesa man and injured a passenger in the truck he was driving.

The incident took place at 3:45 a.m. Monday on Live Oak Canyon Road, near the entrance of O’Neill Regional Park, according to a news release issued by the CHP’s Capistrano Station.

The victim — identified Wednesday by the Orange County coroner’s office as Christopher John Aviles — was traveling southbound at an unknown speed when he lost control of his Toyota pickup truck, causing the vehicle to overturn, police reported.

He was ejected from the truck and sustained fatal injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene and is believed to have suffered blunt trauma injuries, according to Supervising Deputy Coroner Kelly Estrada.

A passenger in the vehicle, described by police as a 24-year-old Mission Viejo resident, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to nearby Providence Mission Hospital.

It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the collision. Estrada confirmed Wednesday an autopsy had been completed and said the coroner’s office was waiting for the results of a toxicology report.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the CHP’s Capistrano Station at (949) 487-4000.
