Costa Mesa firefighters responded to a fire at a single-family residence just after midnight on Saturday in the 3000 block of College Avenue.

Firefighters arriving on the scene were met with an active fire believed to have originated in the kitchen, though its exact cause remains under investigation. Crews worked to knock back the flames and were able to prevent them from spreading beyond an adjacent room and the attic.

Residents were alerted by smoke alarms and escaped safely.

Firefighters rescued the residents’ dogs, one of which was treated with oxygen at the scene. Some of the human victims were checked for smoke inhalation, but none required treatment, according to officials.

Authorities coordinated with the Red Cross to arrange for housing and related support, but it was determined that residents had resources with their neighbors and did not require further assistance. The city’s building department was also on scene to provide services, fire officials confirmed.
