Eighteen Phoenix seniors took flight Thursday afternoon at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church near Newport Harbor High School.

Newport-Mesa’s Cloud Campus, the district’s online platform established during the pandemic, graduated what is now its second official class. It was the first in-person graduation the school has held.

Last year’s commencement was also done digitally, though this year’s was also livestreamed to families.

Garbed in baby blue graduation gowns, seniors gathered and celebrated the occasion with cheers and applause. Student speaker Bella Treger delivered remarks along with faculty speaker Candice Woods. The graduating class was accepted by district trustee Krista Weigand, who presides over Trustee Area 6.

“The Class of 2022 at Cloud Campus is a special class,” said Principal Racquel Stephens in a prepared statement. “This class marks not only the first in-person graduation for our virtual school but a remarkable achievement by these students.

“These students exemplify our SOAR values of self-acceptance, ownership, acceptance and resilience. Each of their stories is unique as they are, with all of them having one theme in common. They have taken ownership of their education in a virtual environment.

“They have learned 21st century skills to navigate digital learning and have increased their expertise in tools that will help them be successful in college and career. They have been accepted into prestigious colleges and universities, and the sky is the limit for them! We are proud of the Cloud Campus graduating Class of 2022!”
