The seventh annual Clam Jam returns to Newport Beach on Saturday, Sept. 3. The event will take place on 7th Street and Balboa Boulevard from noon to sundown.

Guests can expect to enjoy live music, a burger truck, balloon animals, games of cornhole, drinks and more, according to organizers.

All proceeds from this year’s Clam Jam will be earmarked for the Friends of Newport Beach Animal Shelter. The shelter is currently under construction but $100,000 is needed to finish the work, according to a news release issued this month by the organization.

Students invited to apply for fire ecology internship

Applications are due Sept. 5 for the Crystal Cove Conservancy’s fire ecology internship program for students in ninth through 12th grade.

Those chosen to participate in the program will have the opportunity to explore the impacts of fire in Orange County with the conservancy, Crystal Cove State Park and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy.

Internships involve a combination of in-person meetings on Saturdays and Zoom some weekday evenings.

Caltrans resurfacing Newport Boulevard

Caltrans will be resurfacing Newport Boulevard in Newport Beach and Costa Mesa from Pacific Coast Highway to the beginning of the Costa Mesa (55) freeway.

The work is scheduled to begin on Sept. 6 and take place Sunday through Thursday nights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. At least one lane will be open in each direction while the work is being done.

Newport Beach City Council candidates’ forum planned

Speak Up Newport will be hosting a candidates’ forum for the City Council race at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 14. All eight candidates are expected to appear.

The event will be held in the Civic Center Community Room, 100 Civic Center Drive. It will also be broadcast on Zoom and NBTV. Residents are encouraged to send questions to question@speakupnewport.com.

‘Tunes at the Dunes’ planned for Labor Day weekend

The Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort will be hosting a number of events and activities beginning Friday for the Labor Day weekend.

Live entertainment and music on Saturday, “Tunes at the Dunes,” will begin at 3 p.m. Saturday. Several food trucks and a full bar will make food and drinks available. An inflatable water park will offer some additional fun throughout the weekend. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Hoag Flu Shot Health Fairs 2022

Hoag is offering free flu shots for adults 18 and older, while suppiles last, at its Flu Shot Health Fairs throughout Orange County this fall.

Registration will be required to reserve a time to receive a flu vaccination.

In Irvine, the health fair will be held from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 17 at Hoag Health Center Irvine Sand Canyon, 16405 Sand Canyon Ave.

Hoag Health Center Huntington Beach, 19582 Beach Blvd. will host the fair on Saturday, Sept. 24, also from 8 a.m. to noon.

In Tustin, the fair is set for 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Oct. 1 at Hoag Health Center Tustin Legacy, 15000 Kensington Park Drive.

This year, Hoag is offering two flu vaccine options: Quadrivalent flu shot, recommended for most adults in good health and is free for adults age 18 and older, and the FLUAD Quadrivalent flu shot, which is recommended for adults age 65 and up who want stronger protection against the flu.

Nick Jonas to perform at inaugural Hope Gala Sept. 10

Recording artist Nick Jonas will perform at the Sept. 10 Hope Gala at Segerstrom Center for the Arts honoring philanthropist Julia Argyros, a longtime supporter of City of Hope.

“As someone whose family has been impacted by cancer, I am honored to lend my voice to the important cause of expanding access to world-renowned cancer care,” Jonas said in a statement.

Hatch Chile Festival Sept. 3 at Bristol Farms Newport Beach

A live roasting associated with Bristol Farms’ annual Hatch Chile Festival will take place on Sept. 3 at Bristol Farms’ Newport Beach, 810 Avocado Ave.

The live roasting event will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is part of the grocers’ larger Hatch Chile Festival, which began officially on Aug. 13. Interested readers can buy the chiles in bulk in addition to related hatch-flavored meats and seafoods and freshly prepared foods with hatch chiles.
