Throngs of strong-willed swimmers hoping to be Huntington Beach lifeguards took to the ocean Saturday morning for the city’s annual competitive tryouts.

They participated in various ocean swims and running on the sand near the pier.

Those who made the initial cut were invited to return for interviews Sunday. Huntington Beach is looking to hire about 20 lifeguards.
