Mesa Consolidated Water District today will begin flushing water mains

and fire hydrants north of the San Diego Freeway, south of Baker Street,

east of Fairview Avenue and west of Harbor Boulevard.

The flushing, which removes normal sediment buildup -- including rust

deposits and sand -- from the pipes, will continue for two weeks.

Water district officials said the flushed water will not be harmful,

but that residents should avoid washing white or light-colored laundry

from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the flushing period.

Residents can clear sediment and discoloration from their plumbing by

running cold water in their bathtubs until the water runs clear, which

should take a few minutes, according to the water district.
