CdM wins girls golf title

Corona del Mar’s girls golf team captured its first league
championship Monday with a victory over University in a three-way
match that also doubled as the first round of the Pacific Coast
League individual finals.
The Sea Kings, who had not lost a match during the regular season,
were forced to make up contests against University and Northwood
because of the smoke from the fires last week. Corona del Mar (7-1)
lost to Northwood (6-3), but defeated University (5-3), 449-458. It
was CdM’s best 18-hole team score ever.
Leading the way for the Sea Kings was sophomore Katie McKitterick,
who shot a 77 on the par-72 Butterfield Stage course at El Prado Golf
Course in Chino. McKitterick holds a one-stroke lead over Northwood’s
Allison Wing and a two-shot advantage over Tesoro’s Amanda Aubin
heading into today’s second round.
Of the 28 golfers who played Monday, 12 advanced to the final
round, including three others from CdM. Katie Albright shot a 92 and
Veronica Friedman and Caitlin McDonald each carded a 93.
Jonna Kim and Michelle Albrecht missed the cut by just one stroke,
finishing with 94 each, while Maggie Nelson shot 104.
Smooth sailing in Sunset
* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor High’s field hockey team tuned up
for the postseason Tournament of Champions that begins today with a
2-0 victory over visiting Edison Monday at Harper Community Center.
The Sailors also regained the Sunset League championship they won
in 2000 and 2001 before Edison took the top spot last fall. The
Chargers (3-1-4 in league) finished second to Newport in the league
this season.
Newport (17-1, 7-1 in league) begins its postseason today against
visiting Glendora, the fourth place team from the Golden West League.
Newport outshot the Chargers, 17-6, including single goals by
Reese Simmons and Tiffany Vandersloot, both coming in the first
period. Vandersloot assisted Simmons’s goal while Victoria Swigart
aided on the second goal.
“Edison is the only team to pack 11 players inside the circle on
us, so it is hard to score,” Wolfe said. “We did not get rattled.”
Newport goalkeeper Amanda Wittman made four saves while the
tenacious defense of Dana Owad, Lauren Curtis and Danielle Pfaff
limited the Chargers’ chances.
“They made some super saves and rushed up for balls,” Wolfe said.
Wolfe also praised the efforts of forward Kristen Jendrusina and
midfielder Jenny Curtis, along with center halfback Jillianne
Whitfield.

* CROSS COUNTRY: The Sage Hill School boys cross country team won
the first Academy League championship in not just the history of the
program, but the school, Monday at Irvine Regional Park in Orange.
Junior Michael Voge paced the Lightning with a third-place
individual finish, completing the three-mile course in 17:25. He was
42 seconds behind champion Kyle Hughes from Capistrano Valley
Christian.
Sophomore Zach Chandy (fifth in 17:31), senior Chris Chiboucas
(seventh in 17:45), sophomore Tim Lefler (eighth in 17:51) and junior
Tristan Cordier (14th in 18:02) helped Coach Nate Miller’s Lightning
avenge a dual-meet loss to St. Margaret’s and claim the team crown.
“St. Margaret’s has been the team to beat all year and, at
midseason, [the Tartans] were substantially ahead of us,” Miller
said. “But we showed up really focused, every guy gave everything he
had and, to a man, they all ran their best races of the season.”
Sage Hill’s girls team finished fifth, paced by freshman Mollie
McGann, who finished seventh in 21:23.
The boys, ranked No. 10 in CIF Southern Section Division V,
advance to the CIF Division V preliminaries, Nov. 15 at Mt. San
Antonio College.
