ON THE AGENDA

Here are some items to be considered by the Newport Beach City

Council on Tuesday.

MARINERS MILE WALKWAY

Some dream of a winding walkway along the water on Mariners Mile

where dining and causal strolls transform the area into a popular

destination. But is it realistic? The council will hold a study

session on the feasibility study for the Mariners Mile Waterfront

Walkway.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The technical and political hurdles to creating the walkway are

immense, but supporters are passionate. Though the council can’t take

any formal action on the matter tonight, expect there to be some push

forward for the plan.

MEASURE S GUIDELINES

In its regular meeting, the council will begin to tackle the

touchy issue of Measure S guidelines. The question before them will

be whether to rewrite some of the General Plan guidelines that can

trigger Greenlight votes.

WHAT TO EXPECT

City officials are revisiting the matter in the wake of a battle

over the Marinapark Resort project planned on the peninsula. Though

the council has agreed to send the matter to a vote of the people,

Greenlight leaders were dismayed that the council didn’t define it as

a Greenlight vote. The distinction has to do with how the city’s

General Plan measures hotels. In the past, hotels have been measured

in terms of the number of rooms. Because Greenlight is triggered when

General Plan guidelines measure by square footage, the council will

now consider whether to add the square footage measure to General

Plan amendments for future hotel projects. Expect Greenlight

representatives to push for this outcome.

COAST HIGHWAY RELINQUISHMENT

The city wants to take over a stretch of Coast Highway in Corona

del Mar from Caltrans to make it easier to put in aesthetic and

safety improvements as well as do other work. But, until recently,

they wanted more money than Caltrans was willing to hand over to

cover costs of maintenance and liability. Now, the council must

decide whether the $3.5 million being offered by Caltrans is enough.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Staff members are recommending that the city take the offer,

though it’s hard to predict whether city leaders will follow that

advice.
