BASKETBALL
EASTBLUFF BOYS & GIRLS’
CLUB
The Cavaliers won the club sixth-grade basketball championship with a 12-0 record, defeating the Clippers, 56-47, in the final.
The team is made up of Kimo Wakim, Adam Varasteh, Kyle Iverson, Drew Mulcaire, Billy MacDonald, Matt Burt and Chris LaCroix.

ALL-STAR TEAMS
Newport Mesa National Junior Basketball has announced its all-star teams in boys’ fifth and sixth grade and girls’ seventh-grade.
The boys’ sixth-grade all-star team includes Jake Comer, Joe Ctvrtlik, Cort Hastings, Matt Livingston, Andrew McCormack, Stephano Nark, Sam Noe, Dylan Pievac, Robert Sullivan and Carter Waite.
The boys’ fifth-grade all-star team includes Reid Chase, Chad Fackler, Jonathan Harzan, Brice Larson, Jeff Lloyd, Rusty Padia, Tommy Padia, Jackson Pries, Conor Roche and Casey Worden.
The girls’ seventh-grade team includes Ellie Nadal, Samantha Archie, Leigh Hagestad, Nicole Dinatale, Kasey Thompson, Natalie Swift, Angelique Plecas, Saylor Schroff, Kassie Stratton and Duran Sharp. The team is coached by Lonnie Nadal and Mike Sharp.
EIGHTH-GRADE BOYS
Newport Mesa 60, Covina Valley East 38: Newport-Mesa won the Southern California Area Championship on Sunday.
The team was led by Cecil Whiteside, Alex Swigert, Jamie Heinecke and James Seals, who dominated the paint with intense defense and clutch baskets. Luke Christiano, Jarrett Logan and Jay Ordaz ran the offense with precision, while Luis Gomez, Jake Manning and Nico Napolitano provided stellar defense and hit big shots throughout the tournament.
SIXTH-GRADE BOYS
The Newport-Mesa all-stars went 3-0 to win the Area Championship, clinching the title with a 39-22 victory over Rancho Santa Margarita.
Andrew McCormack led the team with 12 points, Dylan Pievac scored nine points and Joe Ctvrtlik and Cort Hastings contributed six points apiece. Jake Comer played strong defense.
Earlier in that day, Newport Mesa defeated Trabuco, 44--42 in a close contest. McCormack again led the way with 14 points, followed by Ctvrtlik (11 points) and Carter Waite (five points).
Newport rallied after trailing the entire game. With the score tied and 15 seconds left on the clock, Ctvrtlik was fouled and hit both ends of a one-and-one to win the game.
Earlier in the tournament, Newport Mesa defeated Tustin North, 32-28. Sam Noe (10 points.) rose to the challenge after Tustin rallied, and was supported by five teammates who each scored four points: Matt Livingston, Stephano Nark, Robert Sullivan, Hastings and Pievac. The team now moves on to the sectional tournament.
FOURTH-GRADE BOYS
Newport Mesa West’s all-star team won its area championship and advanced to the sectionals.
The team is made up of Gannon Bond, Braden Brahs, Andrew Chase, Hale Furey, Matt Hurst, Jeff Johnston, Michael Karamardian, Luke Napolitano, Matt Sherburne and Kevin Taheri. The team is coached by Charley Hurst and Steve Brahs
TRACK AND FIELD
FUTURE STARS MEET
An elementary school track meet attracted 175 students from Andersen, East Bluff, Harbor View, Lincoln and Newport Coast elementary schools to Corona del Mar High recently.
Andersen won the meet with 318 points, claiming the perpetual trophy. East Bluff cam in second with 144 points, followed by Newport Coast (129), Harbor View (82) and Lincoln (27).
Andersen and East Bluff have also organized running clubs to train students for this weekend’s Spirit Run at Fashion Island.

PONY DIVISION
Daily Pilot 9, Coastal Homes 7: Daily Pilot took a 9-1 lead before Coastal rallied with six runs in the fourth inning.
Sandon Griffin and Austin Blodgett each had two hits for Daily Pilot, with other hits coming from Jack Gerdau (two runs scored), Patrick Vorwerck, Sam Cubiero, Jeff Condino and Riley Conroy (two RBI). Cubiero and Gerdau pitched well, and Blake Thomsen and Matt Ruiz made good plays in the field.
For Coastal Homes, Ryan Grable and Eric Morris each had two hits. Tommy Colton and Austin Jones also had hits.
Daily Pilot 11, Cove Motors 4: Sam Cubiero, Jack Gerdau, Patrick Vorwerck and Matt Ruiz combined on a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts for Daily Pilot.
Vorwerck had three hits, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Ruiz had two hits and scored three runs. Thomsen scored twice.
John Christian pitched well for Cove Motors and had a hit, as did David Weiland, Chase Carlile and Nick Couchot.
Cove Motors 14, Panda Express 4: Grant Davis and Nick Couchot powered the offense in Cove Motors’ decisive victory over previously unbeaten Panda Express.
Davis led the offensive attack for Cove Motors (2-2), driving in two runs with a triple. He also had a single and a walk, scoring three runs.
Couchot singled and doubled, driving in two runs, and scored on a triple by Tyler Kring. John Christian held the Panda Express offense in check, pitching four strong innings.
For Panda Express, Chris Freeman had a solid day with a single, walk and two runs.
BRONCO DIVISION
Beach Pit BBQ 4, Newport Auto Center 1: Beach Pit’s Christian Comet set the tone by pitching three scoreless innings.
A.J. Swies hit a two-run single for Beach Pit in the first inning, driving in Sean Goodwin and Chris Sheppard. Brennan Callahan scored on Kyle Benter’s single in the second inning.
Swies pitched two innings of relief, giving up one run.
Newport Auto Center received good pitching performances by Conner Sweeney and Bret Parker. Daniel Albert and Parker each got hits.
MUSTANG DIVISION
Pres Companies 9, Cal Coastal Loans 5: Andrew Chase had two hits and drove in three runs for Pres Companies.
Keaton Cablay had a single and scored three runs, Isaiah Suarez hit a run-scoring single and Ryan Goodwin singled and scored a run. Brad Tapfer did not allow a hit in three innings, striking out eight batters, and Quinci Holgate pitched a scoreless sixth inning.
Ryan McCully, Bryan Shollin, Noah Robson and Cole Sorensen also contributed to the win.

PONY DIVISION
Costa Mesa Angels 3, Newport Harbor Banta 1: Ryan Boulger pitched six innings for the Angels, striking out nine. Tim Miller and Andrew Albers each had a hit and drove in a run.
Costa Mesa Angels 4, Corona del Mar Daily Pilot 3: The Angels (4-0) were led by P.J. Maloney, who struck out nine and walked none in seven innings of work. Garrett Hirsch hit a two-run double, driving in Maloney and Bryan Williams. Ryan Boulger added a solo home run.
Costa Mesa Yankees 9, Costa Mesa Eagles 3: Victor Trujillo pitched five shutout innings, striking out nine, and hit a two-run homer for the Yankees.
Newport Harbor Outback Steakhouse 5, Costa Mesa Dodgers 2: Kamran Qureshi hit a home run and Ryan Cherney pitched well for the Dodgers in a loss.

LITTLE LEAGUE
MAJOR DIVISION
Angels 2, Red Sox 1: Evan Daniele and Tommy Bubonic combined to strike out 14 batters for the Angels. Daniele struck out eight of the nine batters he faced.
In the top of the fourth, the Red Sox’s Zach Murtaugh reached on a bunt single and later scored. The Angels’ Cort Hastings answered in the bottom of the inning, crushing a double to center field to score Chase Forrest.
In the bottom of the fifth, Daniele reached on an error and later scored to put the Angels ahead. Bubonic held firm in the top of the sixth, striking out the side.
Red Sox pitcher Allen Brown had a strong outing, striking out eight in 4 2/3 innings.
Angels 8, Dodgers 1: Matt English had three hits and two RBI for the Angels, who broke a scoreless tie in the third inning.
Matt van Rossem led off with a double down the left-field line. Rob Rosenast (2 for 3) tallied his first RBI of the season, scoring van Rossem, and English singled in Rosenast.
The fourth inning started with a double by Mitchell Meleski, who later scored on a single by Parker Varner. Tommy Bubonic singled, leading to another run.
Evan Daniele and Bubonic shut out the Dodgers through five innings. Daniele fanned seven in three innings, while Bubonic held the Dodgers hitless in his two innings.
The Dodgers’ lone hit was a sixth-inning double by Blake Zimring to score Blake Grove.
AAA DIVISION
Rangers 10, Cubs 8: Kyle Mattern hit a two-run inside-the-park home run in the top of the fifth inning to lead the Rangers.
Mattern and Paddy Conrow had strong pitching performances, aided by Calder Maloney at catcher. Blake Schneekluth made a nice backhand stop at third base for the Rangers.
For the Cubs, Tommy Casey and Jake Hastings played well.
Padres 11, Athletics 7: The Padres rallied from a five-run deficit to win their game. Kevin Thomsen threw three scoreless innings for the Padres, allowing one hit and striking out six.
Hale Furey and Brian Wagner hit back-to-back homers for the Padres. Additional offense came from Thomsen, Matthew Reise and Kevin and Randall Hill.
The Athletics were led by Connor Rogers (a triple) and Wyatt Zalewski (a double). The Athletics also got hits from Andrew Larsen, Trey Wood, Cole Martin, Gannon Bond and Aaron Shott.

MAJOR DIVISION
Costa Mesa Angels 9, Westminster 2: Tyler Sheffner, Garrett Prather and J.T. McLuckey each hit homers for the Angels, who scored nine unanswered runs.
Tyler Taormina went 3 for 3 for the Angels, Jack Bunker’s two stolen bases in the fourth inning allowed him to score on Aaron Axtel’s sacrifice, and Cody Hanify’s bunt in the sixth sealed the game.
McLuckey pitched six solid innings, allowing four hits. Ryan Taormina and Anthony Dean led the infield defense, and outfielders Kurtis Williams and Jordan Tate made big catches.

MINOR DIVISION
Giants 9, Astros 7: The Giants battled back from a seven-run deficit to win Saturday.
Ekolu Ledbetter-Garcia sparked the offense in the bottom of the third with an RBI triple. The Giants scored three more runs in the third and five in the fourth, on hits by Matt Thomas, Branden Arceyut, Christian Arceyut and Ryan Adkisson.
Thomas pitched three scoreless innings. Christian Arceyut caught a line drive at third base in the fifth inning and a fly ball in right field in the sixth. Adkisson made a diving catch in centerfield. Peter Gekchyan caught a pop fly at first base.
T-BALL
Cardinals vs. Braves: The Cardinals and the Braves took turns hitting the ball all over the field. Every Cardinal player had at least two hits. The offense was led by Alfredo Montez, Kevin Volk and Delani Guyot, who each had three hits, with Volk and Montez scoring runs. Brandon Ehrlich, Joey Wakely, Ian Robbs, Cassidy Harrison, Matt Rodgers, and Daniel Hendrickson all played well on offense and defense.

GIRLS’ UNDER-10
Costa Mesa Chaos 1, Tustin 0: Goalkeepers Elaine Moya and Cynthia Escalante were superb in goal for Costa Mesa.
Sweeper Marlene Calderon led a defense that included Jayme Krohnfeldt. Amy Heil, and Claudia Huerta. The midfield of Jacqueline Hubbard, Emily Gruber and Alba Maria Barrios dominated play.
Cristina Tuer and Julyana Bello created scoring opportunities but were held scoreless. Costa Mesa scored the game’s only goal when Jacqueline Hubbard beat three defenders with a beautiful cross from the right to Claudia Huerta, who slotted it past the Tustin goalie.

GIRLS’ UNDER-10
E-Lemon-ators vs. 7-Ups: Outstanding goals were scored by the E-Lemon-ators’ Samantha Rossi and Isabella “Izzy” Islava. After the game, team captain Cortlynn Clement gave “Sour Power” team play awards to Cleo Harrington, Hailey Oberst, Abigael Bullock, Vanessa Fleming and Rebekah Foster for their play.
GIRLS’ UNDER-8
Pink Panthers vs. Bumblebees: In the first half, Grace Clemence scored one goal and Julie Doyle scored two for the Pink Panthers. In the second half, Clemence scored again, as did her sister Holly Clemence. Peyton Groves added two more goals. The Pink Panthers had great defense, particularly from Elizabeth Groux, Samantha Del Toro, Madeleine Kanzler and Elise Denghausen.
Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Green Dragons: Paris Pratt kicked in two goals for the Chili Peppers. Kailynn Thomas-Huynh was fast on the field and had a shot bounce off the post. Holly Kanen was speedy and covered the entire field. Tatum McNutt and Lizzi Larson were solid in goal. Ciera D’Alessandro had one assist. Hannah Bodenhamer and Abby Scott put up a defensive wall and Emily Goltz swept the midfield of opponents.
The Green Dragons came alive in the second half after a slow start. Katrina Heil, playing her first soccer game, made several great saves in goal. Defenders Kathryn Arblaster and Caylee Talbot repeatedly turned back the Chili Peppers offense. Yasmine Gomez and Isabel Jeremias won several balls in the midfield. Julia Ackerman and Destry Comp brought up the ball up field into scoring position. Sienna Amoroso took a turn in goal in the first quarter.
BOYS’ UNDER-5
Green Monkeys vs. Blue Sharks: Matthew Mowery, Tanner Casey, and Dayton Smith each scored multiple goals for the Green Monkeys. Jared Honda and Luke Nataupsky stayed in the action with several charges on goal. All five Monkeys demonstrated great passing throughout the game.
