Boys’ hoops season ends

Another successful season of the Boys’ Basketball League at the Boys & Girls Club of Laguna Beach recently wrapped up with teams winning championships and players earning trophies.

Nearly 250 youth in grades K-through-8 participated in the league and were coached by more than 30 volunteers. The league’s tradition has a history that has spanned all 54 years that the club has been serving the community.

At the close of the season, every player in the Club’s Biddy Hoops League (grades K-1) were awarded a participation trophy. The league also gave special awards to Christian Albarran (MVP), Jordan Glenn (sportsmanship) and Jeff Tankersley (games official).

In the Instructional League (grades 2-3), the Hornets, coached by Ron Smith, took first place with a victory over the Bobcats. The Hornets are Darin Richardson, Set Smith, Maxwell Morgan, Sam Wolters, Russell Thomas, Owen and Aiden Smith, and Omar Staubli.

The Bobcats, coached by Brett Sveningson and Chris Thurnin, were comprised of Henry Schineller, James Marshall, Judge and Zack Washer, Brett Sveningson, John Vipulis and Julien Thurnin.

In the Junior Division (grades 4-5), the top-seeded Knicks beat the Grizzlies by a point in the final playoff game. The Knicks also won the regular season title with a 7-1 record. Coached by Alan Sofferman, the Knicks are Julian Owens, Colin Gauthier, Jake Reeves, Matthew Wilson, Ben Polins-Jones, Michael Sofferman and Cody Latendresse.

In the Senior League (grades 6 through 8), the Mavericks, who finished in third place during the regular season, upset the first-place Hornets in the postseason finale. The Mavericks are coached by Skip Maison and Matt Crowl, and are made up of Teague Hamilton, Seth Rinaldi, Trey Ross, Luke Barker, Andrei Kvitsinski, Tristan Ross, Avery Crowl and Dane Maison.

The Hornets included Cameron Hall, Brandon Banks, Matt Baum, Brian Ludloff, Andrew Congelton, Larry Stewart and Austin Lennon.

The Boys Basketball League will take registration for its next season in September.
