Top girls’ volleyball teams contend

Some of the Southland’s top prep girls’ volleyball teams will play at five county sites beginning Friday as the 2007 Dave Mohs Tournament begins.

Hosted by Edison High, matches will be played at Edison, Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Fountain Valley and Costa Mesa.

In addition to Edison, Huntington Beach is the other local school competing in the tournament.

Tournament action begins with pool play at 3:30 p.m. Friday, continues with more pool play at 8 a.m. Saturday and concludes with division championship matches on Monday.

Division I

At Edison High:

Pool I: Santa Margarita, Edison, San Clemente, Ayala.

Pool 4: Santa Barbara, La Costa Canyon, Esperanza, Valencia/Valencia

Pool 5: Laguna Beach, Mater Dei, Temecula Valley, Redlands

At Newport Harbor High:

Pool 2: Newport Harbor, Torrey Pines, Bishop Montgomery, Los Osos.

Pool 3: Upland, Dana Hills, El Dorado, San Marcos.

At Corona del Mar High:

Pool 6: Dos Pueblos, Corona del Mar, Mission Viejo, El Modena

Pool 7: Carlsbad, Vista Murrieta, Rosary, Tesoro

Pool 8: Harvard/Westlake, Los Alamitos, Peninsula, Woodbridge

Division II

At Fountain Valley High:

Pool 1: Francis Parker, Villa Park, Claremont, Sage Hill

Pool 2: Santa Fe Christian, South Torrance, La Habra, Irvine

Pool 5: Norco, Trabuco Hills, Fountain Valley, Katella

At Newport Harbor High:

Pool 3: Brea Olinda, Great Oak, Aliso Niguel, Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana

Pool 4: Foothill, Notre Dame Prep, Downey, Fullerton

At Costa Mesa High:

Pool 6: Murrieta Valley, Northwood, Simi Valley, Costa Mesa

Pool 7: La Quinta/La Quinta, University, Valencia/Placentia, Oxford Academy

Pool 8: Huntington Beach, St. Margaret’s, Laguna Hills, Canyon/Anaheim

In girls’ field hockey:

Two city rivals, Edison and Huntington Beach, opened their 2007 seasons against one another, and the Chargers used a goal by senior Kelsey Hwang to score a 1-0 victory over the host Oilers.

Keeper Danielle Herrington recorded the shutout for the Chargers. Senior Chelsea Flynn set up Hwang’s goal.
