Day for kids slated at Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Laguna Beach will celebrate the national Boys & Girls Club Day for Kids from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Main Branch, 1085 Laguna Canyon Road.

The free daylong event celebrates and honors children across the country.

In addition to activities, the clubs will host its first annual Chalk Art Festival for kids and parents. Families will also be able play together in the games room, have their faces painted, enter a hula hoop contest and fuel their fun with a barbecue lunch and snow cones.

Workshop series for mothers and daughters

Speaker and psychotherapist Jeanne Michele will co-host a three-part workshop for mothers and daughters Sept. 24, 27 and 30 with Judy Kelly in Kelly’s new retail and creative gathering space, Pure Light, 821 Laguna Canyon Road, Laguna Beach.

Kelly invited Newport Beach-based Michele to share her expertise on matters relating to adolescent girls and their mothers.

The workshop series will address the challenges of traditional mother/daughter relationships, as well as the special joys of preparing daughters for womanhood and their future in the world. The weekday sessions will run from 7 to 9 p.m. The Sunday session will be from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

Farless named National Merit semifinalist

Lindsey Farless of Laguna Beach High School has been named one of about 16,000 semifinalists nationwide in the 53rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

She will have the chance to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, totaling $34 million, that will be offered next spring.
