Free genealogy lecture series offered

The community is invited to attend a free lecture series on genealogy taught by Collyn Youngman, who has taught several workshops and classes for members and prospective members of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The lecture series will be at the Susi Q Center, 380 Third St., from 10 to 11 a.m. Mondays as follows:

Keeping New Year’s resolutions

Psychologist and UCLA adjunct professor Marion Jacobs will present steps in how to stay motivated to turn New Year’s resolutions into realities from 1 to 2 p.m. Jan. 12 at the Susi Q Center.

Emergency preparedness lecture

Seniors can learn what to have ready if an emergency arises, including how to make a plan, how to create a Go Kit, what supplies should be in the kit, and tips on evacuation procedures for specific situations. This seminar, taught by Erin Ulibarri, a health educator with the County of Orange, Office on Aging, will be from 2 to 3 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Susi Q Senior Center. Braille Institute support group

A representative from the Braille Institute offers a support group from 1 to 3 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month at the Susi Q for those who are experiencing difficulty with daily living activities due to sight loss. Upcoming topics include: Kitchen Confidence (January and February “” easy cooking and dining with ease); Getting Around Town (March “” traveling safely in your neighborhood); and Staying Connected (April and May “” reading, writing and communicating). Utilities Commission officer to speak

A California Public Utilities Commission Outreach Officer will provide consumer information and education from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Susi Q.

Topics will include: how to take charge of your utility bills; slamming and cramming (with regards to telemarketer’s tactics); How to avoid telemarketers; household goods movers (how to avoid being ripped off); and information pertaining to the new “Smart Electric Meters” which every Southern California Edison customer will soon receive. Refresher bridge course on Mondays

This eight-week course is designed for players who want to brush up on their bridge skills. Each session will start with a short lesson on basic bidding techniques and responses. Followed by supervised play, discussion of hands and scoring. This class is taught by ACBL-Certified bridge instructor Ann Cressman, silver life master.

The course is from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Mondays beginning Feb. 8 and costs $95, paid in advance.
