A scheduled power outage on the Balboa Peninsula is dragging on unexpectedly due to an equipment failure and the power may not be restored until 7:30 p.m., a contractor on the project said Tuesday afternoon.

Jeff Kasha of Hotline Construction said that as of 6 p.m. Southern California Edison crews were working furiously to conduct emergency tests and finish other procedures before they could restore power.

Edison was preparing a section of the Balboa Peninsula for underground utilities and planned to shut off electricity from E Street to the end of the peninsula between 2 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday.
