Dancers in motion

The Laguna Beach High School dance team will heat up the stage during the cold winter nights with its annual holiday Winter Dance Concert.

Directed by dance instructor and choreographer Lisa Jay, “In Motion” will feature more than 50 students and four guest choreographers in a fun array of funk, lyrical, ballet, Latin jazz, Broadway and hip-hop performances.

“Each year my goal is to go bigger and better,” Jay said. “I’ve given the choreographers the freedom to do their own thing and just be creative, and what they’ve produced is great.

“I’m so proud of our team.”

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. today at the Artists Theatre, 625 Park Ave. in Laguna Beach, and will run again at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Special features include a “Bitter” routine about a lesson learned through heartbreak and betrayal by junior Sarah Busic, a funky dance number by visiting L.A. hip-hop storyteller Darrien, a mother-daughter piece by mother-to-be Danielle Pigneri, and an Aretha Franklin choir performance under the direction of Roxanna Ward.

There is no theme to the show, Jay said, but “something everyone can enjoy.”

Other numbers include “Moments” by Erika Fernandez, “Catina” by Tracey Bonner, and “Echoes of Chaos” by Jay.

The music is equally as eclectic as the dance, featuring artists including Daft Punk, Imogene Heaps, Kesha and Aerosmith.
