9-year-old is junior lifeguard of year

Share

This 9-year-old has a resume that could humble many. And that’s before adding on his latest accomplishment: being named the Newport Beach Junior Lifeguard of the Year.

Christopher Hughes was honored at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting for his hard work with the junior lifeguards over the summer, his first year in the program. He completed the grueling Gray Lunde Ironman competition, a 1,600-meter swim and 4.5-mile run. The water temperature was in the low 50s.

He also speaks fluent French, is on a swim team, water polo team and is training with the All American Boys Chorus. Hughes was a semifinalist in an Inland vocal competition and plays guitar and piano.
