Alice Herrmann Fulton

Alice Herrmann Fulton was born June 3, 1913 in Ottumwa, Iowa. Alice was the youngest daughter of Ann and Andrew Herrmann and the adorable baby sister to Orra, Gertrude, Fran and Harriet.
Alice and her sisters pitched in around the family farm while dreaming of moving to the city away from the dusty, blistering hot days of summer and the frigid, snowy winters of Iowa farm life in the 1920’s and 30’s. Alice love to regale her grandchildren about the long, hot summer days picking strawberries and using an outhouse in the icy dead of winter.
Alice graduated from Ottumwa High School in 1931 and Ottumwa Heights junior college and she attended the University of Iowa receiving her teaching certificate. She joined the staff of Agassiz school where she faithfully toiled as a farm-school teacher with students from kindergarten through 8th grade in one small classroom.
Alice married James E. Fulton June 10, 1931The family moved to Chicago in 1954 and then to La Habra, California in 1955. During these years Alice was a devoted stay-home mother while plying her musical and artistic talents and dominating the local Bridge clubs with an uncommon love for the game in addition to corralling her two rambunctious sons.
In 1958, the family moved to Newport Beach, California. Alice discovered tennis, she quickly became an enthusiastic and good natured player on the courts of Lido Island and the Balboa Bay Club. In her 70’s her knees gave in to age but she continued enjoying her bridge games and playing her organ as a resident of Costa Neuporte in Costa Mesa, California.
Alice and Ed were a devoted couple until his death in 1998. Alice is survived by sons, James JR (Sara) of Miami Beach and John (Tina) of San Clemente and five grandchildren, James III, Kelly, George, Casey and Kelsie and her seven great grandchildren.
At age 97, Alice passed peacefully on Sunday morning, February 6th.
