UPDATED: Suspicious package at O.C. Fair not a threat

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad has responded to a suspicious package at the Orange County Fair, authorities said late Thursday.

Police were notified at 8:40 p.m. about a suspicious backpack on the property and cleared the immediate area but have not evacuated the entire fair, said Lt. Gary Strachan.

Updated 12:34 a.m.: A suspicious package at the Orange County Fairgrounds on Thursday night was not a threat, sheriff’s department officials said early Friday.

An employee reported an unattended backpack at the fairgrounds at about 8:40 p.m., said Lt. Gary Strachan. The bomb squad responded and evacuated the immediate area while they investigated and ultimately determined the bag wasn’t a threat at about 11 p.m., he said.

“It just had some personal items,” Strachan said.
