Irvine crash victim identified
An elderly man killed Monday after being hit by a car in Irvine has been identified as Sung Lee of Irvine.
A little after 7 a.m., Lee, 77, was driving downhill in the Turtle Ridge neighborhood off the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor (73 Freeway) near Newport Coast Drive when he rear-ended a landscaping truck parked on the side of the street, Irvine police said in a news release.
After the collision, the elderly man exited his car and was hit by another vehicle while he was standing in the street. The driver of that car, a 16-year-old resident, was uninjured. Lee died at a local hospital from injuries.
Police said interviews with the driver and witnesses indicate the glare off the street from the sun could have been a factor in both collisions. Anyone who may have witnessed the crashes or has information is asked to call Irvine Police Sgt. Dennis Maisano at (949) 724-7023.
